Nokia and Samsung up for the Challenge

The Apple iPhone 3G launch has taken the Indian mobile phone industry by storm. Now we are hearing noises from the Nokia, Samsung, and Motorola camp that they are planning to launch cheaper full touch screen phones in competition to the iPhone.

They plan to launch similar multi-touch interface phones and that too at a lower price. There is also word from top managements that the companies are working on an online store for music to compete with the prevailing iTunes from Apple Inc.

A study done shows that over 40 per cent of the phones will be touchscreen phones by the start of 2012. This has put every mobile manufacturer on their toes and they are all out to outdo each other, reports Technews.in.

Currently Nokia has a 70 per cent market share in the Indian mobile phone industry and the company is looking to keep the figures that way.

Indian engineer designs matchbox-sized inverter

Bangalore: Subrata Datta, a Hyderabad-based engineer, has invented a matchbox-sized device that can power homes even during power cuts. The inverter can power TV, computer or fridge.

Datta, employed at the R&D Center, CMC Ltd, explained his device saying, "The V-inverter can be installed in and connected to the meter box of one's house. It can be controlled and regulated by the electric supply department. So whenever there's a greater demand for power, high voltage electrical gadgets like air-conditioners will automatically switch off. Only basics like fans, lights, TV, computer, refrigerator and life saving instruments would work by reducing the consumption of power in the entire neighbourhood."

The V-inverter does not require any secondary power source like the normal inverters or generator. This reduces cost, investment maintenance, pollution and emission associated with fuel-based generators, reg ular inverters and lead-acid batteries.

Installing this V-inverter is also very easy. The unit cost of the energy of the V-inverter power is less than general inverters or fuel based generators as it comes at the cost of regular supplied power.

Added Datta, "This load controlling device can restrict the crisis time consumption by each consumer, at a limited power output (150 Watt) to improve the balance of demand-supply ratio and avoid total power cuts."

World's first: Brit scientist infects himself with computer virus

London, May 27 (ANI): Dr Mark Gasson, a cybernetics expert at the University of Reading, has become the first human to be infected with a computer virus.

Gasson has had a computer chip implanted in his hand which is programmed to open security doors to his lab. The chip also ensures that only he is able to switch on and use his mobile phone.

But the British boffin deliberately infected the chip with a computer virus. It was then automatically transmitted to affect to the lab security system.

"Once the system is infected, anybody accessing the building with their passcard would be infected too," he told Sky News.

The virus on his chip is benign. But malicious computer code could give criminals access to a building. (ANI)

Lenovo Teases Pocket Yoga Touch Screen Netbook
(Updated with new photos) Lenovo this morning confirmed the existence of its mystery netbook by posting teaser images on its photo feed. The system is now called the Pocket Yoga and has both the ultra-wide, VAIO P-like display and leather-bound shell of leaked photos. Concept sketches, however, show the PC not only supporting a touchscreen for a stylus but a convertible design that would let the display flip backwards to use it as a very small tablet.

The computer still doesn't have specifications, though its size would likely dictate an Intel Atom or similar chip. Previous photos have also suggested it would have a built-in webcam as well as a seemingly trackpoint-like controller to back up the touch display.Update: Lenovo said the notebook is described as an "experiment" from 2007 that, following the earlier leak, the company decided to show in more formal shots. It argued that the Pocket Yoga is "finished" but added that the company is always designing new products.

1. Aperture - decides how much light your camerea can gather and how good it is at picturing in low light conditions/or avoiding too much light on bright sunny days. Aperture is normally in terms of F number i.e. a multiplier of the focal length of lens. The normal range of aperture is expressesd as F2.8-F8.0. F2.8 is the largest aperture and F8.0 is the smallest aperture opening.

A “fast” lens is one that has a large maximum aperture (F2.4, F2.0 for current digital cameras; F1.4, F1.2 for 35mm film cameras). For the more interested pls refer

2. Optical Zoom - How close we van get to the target is determined by the optical zoom of the camera. Normal quick shot type slim digital cameras has optical zoomx between3x to 5x. For the larger zooming the cameras get bulkier with larger lens assemblies. But again its a compromise between the bulk of the camera and how close you want to get to the tiger in the zoo. Larger bulkier cameras may have optical zoom upto 15x or 20x. for further closing up on the tiger’s tooth you will need to add conversion lenses. These are large telescopes you add to your Digital cameras and are mostly used by pro photographers. For a home user 3 to 5x ia good enough given the slim pocket size of the camera.

3. Shutter speed - The good news is that most pocket type digital cameras dont have shutters. Shutter is the machanical opening closing mechanism that allows the film (in old cameras, sensor in modern digital cams) to be exposed to light for a set period depending on the light condition and the subject to be shot. Coz digital cameras have sensor which is constantly being exposed to light as the image is being displayed on the LCD screen at the back of the camera. So shutter is just simulated electronically capturing the image for thetime period sensor is being exposed to light. Normal shutter speed range from 1/1000 to 4 secs. High end cameras mat have shutter speeds ranging from 1/2000 to 16secs. But for low shutter speeds in excess on 1sec the camera has to be extremely stable so prefrably using Tripods for very low shutter speed shooting. Low shutter speed shooting is used for low light conditions.

4. ISO Rating - This is a term from conventional film type camera where ISO rating was used for film speed. This means that film with higher ISO rating can be used for shooting moving objects or on overly low light conditions lights. While shooting in very bright light the shutter speed is kept very low 1/1000 , 1/100typesand ISO rating around 80, 100. ISO rating ranges form 80, 100, 200, 400, 800…. to 1600 or 3200 in more advanced models. In films ISO is the sensitivity of the film. This means that film with higher ISO rating can be used in very low light conditions without increasing the shutter speed thus preventing blur images which are common in high shutter speed shooting if tripod or stable stands are not used.This nromally happens due to camera shake which is common if shooting is done by holding the camera in hand and shutter speed is very high i.e. in excess of 0.5 sec. In digital this is achieved by varying the sensor sensitivity, but higher ISO ratings adds the element of noise in the images.

Most quick shot type digital cameras work on automatic settings where camera automatically decides the above factors for optimal image quality. But to add an element of creativity some high end models allows users to fully control - shutter speed, aperture and ISO ratings.

Another major factor which determines the picture quality of the shots taken by the digital camera is the Sensor size.

Sensor Size is one major factor which differentiates SLRs from low end pocket type digitals. Sensor is the film of the camera. In conventional film type cameras the film size was 35mm by 35mm approx. So thats a pretty large sensor size. Thats why the images shot by film type cameras has more pixels that most high end cameras available as on date. But having such a large sensor in digital cameras will sky rocket the price to barely approachable. There is another USP of digital cameras i.e. Megapixels the numberof pixels packed in the sensor. Each pixel captures a part of the scene. The larger the megapixel more clarity the image will have but but but the light variation or color carrying capacity of the pixel is determined by the physical size of the pixel. This means that a 10MP camera with sensor size of 1/2.5 inch and a 10MP SLR with sensor size of 25×18mm will have much smaller pixel and hence limited color representing capacity than the latter.

But this factor comes in play while shooting very high quality pro images. Normal user will not notice much difference. But there is extremely high price to pay for this larger sensor size so most digital cameras contend with 1/2.5 inch sensor packing more megapixels per sensor.

The ultimate decision depends on the combination of these factors.

LG has added two brand new music phones to its ever-growing line up of mobile phones in India. The new models announced are the GM200 and the KM335 and are said to “offer unprecedented audio experience with a blend of music, style and exclusive features”. With the GM200, LG also introduces its first Dolby Mobile with powerful bass. The KM335 features an AM / FM radio and dual stereo speaker.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T77 ($299.99 direct) is a beauty.

Its compact design, metallic features, and touch screen make it feel like a luxury item. Aside from color fringing in the corners of images, most users will find the shots they take dazzling. The camera’s 3-inch LCD touch screen is very responsive, and the user interface is more intuitive than those of competing touch-screen models, such as the Nikon Coolpix S60 or the Kodak EasyShare v1073. The less-expensive Canon PowerShot SD790 IS ($249) and Nikon Coolpix S610c deliver images that are on a par with T77’s, but they don’t have touch screens and fun in-camera retouching options. Beyond that, this Cyber-shot is just handsome. Of course, as with any camera that employs a touch screen, battery life suffers.

The T77 has very slim build, measuring just 2.4 by 3.8 by 1.3 inches (HWD) but feels rock solid. Two of these in your pocket would probably feel like one Canon PowerShot A1000 IS. The camera comes in silver, black, pink, green, or brown. My review unit had the hue of a deep-brown leather couch or dark mahogany. Dropping down the lens shield on the front turns the camera on. The lens has a focal range of 6.18mm to 24.7mm (35mm equivalent: 35mm to 140mm) with corresponding maximum f-stops of f/3.1 and f/5.9, and a 4X optical zoom.

Sony’s touch-screen interface works well. It displays a lot of information without overcrowding. Because the large, white icons are projected over black lines that border the image in standard aspect ratio, they’re almost always visible. When you’re shooting pictures in 16:9 mode, the entire screen becomes the viewfinder and the white icons float over the image, still easily readable. The screen on the $199 Kodak EasyShare v1073, by comparison, shows small gray icons that tend to blend in to what’s on the LCD. If you don’t remember where all the controls are, you have trouble finding buttons sometimes. The Nikon s60 doesn’t display as much info as the T77—for example, it takes four clicks to change the ISO setting, whereas the T77’s interface lets you do the same job in just one.

Sony includes physical buttons for the most commonly used mission-critical operations: on/off, shutter release, playback/shoot, and zoom in/out. This makes life a lot easier—having to work with the touch screen for these operations could become a nuisance. The zoom control on the Nikon S60 is an icon; as a result, you’re often relying on the touch screen, and that becomes very frustrating. If you’re the type of user who takes pictures only in Auto mode, you’ll probably use the T77 touch screen only to view your pictures in playback mode.

The T77 is reasonably quick camera. It’s not the fastest I’ve tested, but you definitely won’t feel as if you’re always waiting for it to catch up to you, as you do with some cameras. First of all, it comes alive quickly: In testing it was able to pull off its first shot in an average of 2.28 seconds after I slid down the shield. And wait time between shots averaged a speedy 2.54 seconds. You won’t have to worry much about shutter lag, either. Using a Shooting Digital shutter lag test, the average of my trials came out to 0.33 second—that’s lightning fast. With so little delay, you’re far less likely to miss important shots.

I use a hardware and software suite called Imatest to get an objective rate for key image characteristics that determine image quality. I concentrate mostly on noise, sharpness, distortion, and color fringing. The T77 performed well in all of these categories except color fringing. Test results showed that most images, when closely inspected, showed color fringing in the corners. On my resolution tests, the T77 captured an average 2,009 pixels per picture height at the center of the lens, which is excellent. It indicates that the center of pictures should be very sharp. Toward the corners of the lens, this number decreased by 24 percent, but there’s bound to be some decrease, and anything less than 30 percent is acceptable. The results indicate that the camera should offer consistently sharp detail throughout images. The Nikon s60, by comparison, captured an average of only 1,683 pixels in the center, and this number decreased by 31 percent towards the corners.

As with most point-and-shooters, you’ll find distortion at both ends of the lens, but the amounts were tolerable. In the wide-angle position, barrel distortion is evident. At the full telephoto position, there’s a bit of pincushion distortion.

Noise levels are acceptable up to and including ISO 400. At ISO 800, things become very dicey, even though you can set the ISO up to 3200. At that highest level, however, you’ll probably be disappointed with the result. Imatest indicated that even at ISO 1600, the noise level was so high that it compromised sharpness by roughly 70 percent.

When I looked at shots I’d taken with the T77 and the Nikon s60 after a morning of rain, I found that the T77 had definitely produced slightly sharper imagery. In a picture of a motorcycle, droplets of rain on the chrome had more definition. As Imatest had indicated, the T77’s images showed some color fringing when viewed at actual size. In the same motorcycle photo, the white lane divider stripes on the street’s black pavement had reds bleeding from one side and blues from the other.

The T77 can record video at 640-by-480 resolution, more commonly known as standard definition (SD). Sony saves high-definition recording for the $399 Cyber-shot T-500. Video recorded with the T77 looks and sounds good. I wish, however, that the camera could take advantage of its 16:9 LCD screen and record widescreen SD video at that aspect ratio at 848-by-480 resolution. The Casio Exilim z250 offers this capability.

Sony has jam-packed this shooter with features, including face and smile detection. With smile detection, you just keep the camera pointed at the face in question—the camera snaps a picture when the smile appears. The T77’s strongest feature, however, is its large assortment of in-camera editing options. There’s a cornucopia of fun effects to choose from, among them soft focus, fish-eye lens, radial blur, and retro. You can even increase someone’s smile ( see the slide show for details ). Each effect has different intensity levels, and the camera adds the effect to a copy of the image, so the original stays intact.

This camera has a lot of features that will impress, but battery performance isn’t one of them. We don’t do a formal battery rundown test for cameras, but, in any case, just taking picture after picture until the camera’s battery runs out of juice isn’t indicative of real-world performance. Why not? Because much of the time spent using a camera involves viewing images on its LCD screen, which can drain the battery without taking a single exposure. This camera has a big LCD, and one that is a touch screen, so I’d expect its lithium ion battery life to be shorter, and the T77 didn’t surprise me. With most cameras, I can test for an entire week on one charge. The T77 required multiple charges during my review period. You may want to carry a spare battery, if you pick the T77.

The Sony Cyber-shot T77 faces tough competition when it comes to point-and-shoot cameras that deliver image quality and speed without draining your bank account. The Canon PowerShot 790 IS, Canon s610, and Nikon s610c, for example, deliver comparable images without the color fringing. Still, Sony’s handsome T77 offers good speed, solid imagery, and exciting in-camera editing tools, all of which add up to a very good buy—just don’t forget to bring along an extra battery.

How to save a wet cell-phone?

After having a few terrible monsoons in India , (and floods and tsunamis and all sorts of crazy things) the question “How to save your wet cell phone?” is close to everyone’s heart!

Here we have given you a detailed guide that will tell you exactly what you can do to save your wet cell phone, and save 700 bucks in repairing cost, IF you act fast enough! .

So, lets begin….Okay, so basically, there are two ways in which water, or some liquid can destroy your phone!

First Way:

If the phone is powered with the battery when it is wet, the water can “short-circuit” the phone! So, to solve this problem, you got to remove the battery, cut the power, and get rid of all the water. How to do this? Well, the best way to do this is explained on the next page.

Second Way:

If, the liquid is not just pure water. If it is sea water or saline water or any water that contains salts and minerals. If the liquid is a cup of coffee or tea. Basically, if the liquid contains any salts, sugars or minerals that will stay behind after the liquid has dried. In this case, the salts/sugars/minerals etc. that stay behind will “corrode” and “short-circuit” the circuits even after the liquid has been removed. How to solve this problem is explained later!

Now, depending on what kind of liquid or water your phone has got wet in, you need to decide which method is for you. Let us start with the basic method (for water that does not contain salt or sugar or minerals) first….

Step 1: Get it out of the water as soon as possible.
The fact is that cell phones are designed to handle small amounts of water. So, if the cell phone is just slightly wet, nothing much will happen to it.

The problem comes when the cell phone falls into a pool of water completely and the water gets into the cell phones circuit board.

Then the cell phone gets “short-circuited” and it goes off! So, the point is, if you can avoid the cell phone from getting too wet, avoid it!

Step 2: Dismantle your phone
Remove the battery AS FAST AS POSSIBLE! Do not even waste time thinking about it! Just do it! It is very likely that your phones circuits have survived. But, if they are still powered by the battery, they will short-circuit when the moisture reaches them! So you have to cut the power. You must remove the battery.Remove the SIM card and the front panel and back panel and any other part of the phone that can be removed! Basically, as we said earlier, dismantle every piece of the phone that can be dismantled! .

Step 3: Dry everything that you can manually.

Use a tissue or a soft cloth to wipe every part of the phone you can wipe and remove all the water of the surface of all the pieces of the phone.

Step 4: Be patient and let the phone dry! .

(The hard part)Now it is VERY important that you DO NOT try to put in the battery and switch on the phone! Let all the parts be dismantled and let the phone dry. This is a hard thing to do. You will have a constant temptation to put the battery back in “just to see” if the phone is okay. But, DO NOT do this! Leave the phone in pieces and let all the pieces dry. Once of the best ways to dry your phone is to put your phone on the “heat vents” on the back of your computer of your TV! Just incase you are confused about what “heat vents” are, here is an image of heat vents behind the TV… Turns out, the amount of heat coming from the “heat vents” is just the perfect amount required to fix your phone! So place all the pieces of the phone carefully over the heat vents such that the wet insides of the phone are exposed to the heat.

Please Note:

Heat other parts of the phone on the “heat vents”, but do not heat the phone’s battery! If you heat the battery, it is likely that the battery will leak and get spoilt.How long should you leave it on the heat vents? For at least 2-3 days!

Step 5: Test your phone

After 3 days of patient waiting and letting your phone dry, now you could try to put in the battery and all other parts and test your phone. If it works, hurray! If it does not, switch it off quickly and let it dry for some more time. Give it a day or so…if you have the patients!.

However:

This way of saving your phone may not work if the phone got wet in a liquid containing salts, sugar or minerals etc. So, incase you dipped your phone in sea water, boring water, a cup of coffee or tea etc. you need to use the “alcohol” method… If you think the liquid in which your phone has fallen is saline, or containing salts or sugars or minerals (like sea water, coffee etc.), using only the previous method will not do. You will need to do a little bit extra to save your phone! .

How do you get rid of the salts, sugars and minerals?
After you dismantle the pieces of your wet phone and remove the battery, try to put the pieces as fast as possible in a bowl of “alcohol”! I know this seems a little scary. I know you are afraid of taking an already wet and damaged phone and putting it into alcohol, but trust us, it’s a good idea!Why alcohol?

Well, all the water/liquid in the phone (along with the salts, sugars and minerals) will dissolve in the alcohol. The alcohol is supposed to be “hygroscopic”. It means that the alcohol attracts water.
So now, once the phone is soaked in the alcohol, you should try to drain out as much alcohol as possible just by moving the phone around. Having done this, only little alcohol will remain on the insides of the phone. And this alcohol should dry up quite quickly, since alcohol evaporates at room temperature.

Note:

If you feel that there is a lot of sugar clogged in the phone (from tea/coffee or some other drink..) you should get your self a bottle of “distilled” water. Let your phone soak in it. The sugars will likely dissolve in the “distilled” water and drip out of the phone.

Where do you get a bottle of distilled water from?
Ask an electrician. Distilled water is generally used for your home inverter batteries, so a local electrician will probably know where to get it in your area.

Fianlly:

You could once again dry your phone in the “heat vents” of the computer or TV and wait for at least 2-3 days before you put in the battery and power up the phone.

In most cases, if you act fast enough, these methods will save your phone. But, if it does not, try taking it to your dealer. Sometimes they have a “quick fix”. As a last resort, go to the phone repair guys!

Great picture, easy use

We bought the SDR-H200 for my church to use in our multimedia program and couldn’t be more pleased. The 3 CCD imaging system gives you an excellent picture–sharp and clear with vivid, true colors. Image stabilization keeps minor shakes and jitters from making it to the screen.

The files on the camera’s hard drive are easy to transfer, though the included software is nothing more than OK. It won’t tempt you to give up your current editing program, whatever it is.

We have a variety of folks using the camera. It’s easy enough to operate that our amateurs can pick it up and start shooting, but has enough extra bells and whistles that some of our more proficient volunteers are happy with it, too. All in all, the SDR-H200 has been a great investment.

My only complaints, both small, have to do with design. In order to access the USB port, you have to remove the battery and run the camera on AC power. And while the LED screen is large and bright, I’m just a relic and miss having an optical viewfinder to use.

This is our first camcorder and love it! The only bad thing is the video editing software - Pixela’s Image Mixer that comes with the box is bad.

It is not very user friendly and hangs (even after downloading the s/w patch).

ACCIDENTAL USEFUL DISCOVERIES.

Like so many inventions, Microwaves were originally discovered accidentally. A scientist working with radio waves happen to place a piece of chocolate near the vacuum tube. When he observed the chocolate has completely melted, he realised that he had hit upon a revolutionary cooking technique totally unknown to mankind then. All this took place about five decades back around thirty years were spent in research before this discovery was used commercially for making microwave cooking ovens.

Microwave Oven.
With the popularity of Microwave Owens in the western world, food industries are going through a revolution. Entrepreneurs are busy designing new food products suitable for Microwave. Similarly, microwavable plastics, earthenware and stoneware kitchen utensils are coming in market. Certain food dishes would never have seen the light of day if microwave had not been discovered in the first place.

How Microwave works?
Microwaves are non-ionising waves that can be best described as “Electromagnetic Waves of about 10cm Wave-Length” resembling radio waves. However, these are entirely different from ionising gamma or x rays. The ionising rays disturb the molecules in food material by chopping away electrons while microwaves only make the molecules of water in the food to vibrate at a very high frequency i.e. 2450 million times per second. Microwaves are produced by the Magnetron which the most important part of his cooker and are showered on the food. This results in intermolecular friction that creates heat inside the material, cooking the food quickly. Since the heat is produced within the food, only food gets hot and not the surrounding air or utensils.

As compared to an electric oven, microwave works 20-25% level of energy consumption. When this cooker runs for a full one hour, it consumes three quarters of a unit of electricity.

Choice of Cooking Vessels.

Recently, a group of computer scientists (all males) announced that computers should also be referred to as being female. Their reasons for drawing this conclusion follow:
Five reasons to believe computers are female: -

1. No one but the Creator understands their internal logic.
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.
3. The message “Bad command or file name” is about as informative as, “If you don’t know why I’m mad at you, then I’m certainly not going to tell you.”

This worm is also known as Downadup or Kido which was first discovered in October 2008.

This worm freely spreads through low security networks, pendrives, and the computer's which does not have the regular updates.

Working Principle of this Worm:-

After entering in to the computer successfully, the worm works by searching for a Windows executable file called services.exe and then becomes a part of that code.
It then copies itself into the Windows system folder and creates a file with the extension called"dll (Dynamic Linked Library)" and then it modifies the registry.
Once the worm is successfully set up it creates an HTTP Server and then downloads files from the Hacker's Website.
The most dangerous feature of this worm is it resets the machines system restore point so that making it very harder to recover the infected system.
Toni Koivunen from F - Secure says that the worm uses a complicated algorithm to generate 100's of different domains every day such as mphtfrxs.net imctaef.cc, etc. But only one of these will actually be the site used to download the hacker's files.
Anyhow the microsoft has released the patch through Windows Update.
But the computer's without the latest security updates are under High Risk.
So , Please Update as soon as Possible.

If you want to make your folder private, then you will use a software, but in Windows XP, there is a trick to lock a folder without a software!!!. Just follow the given steps below,

1. Create a folder and name it whatever you want. Assume that your folder name is "private".

2. Create a notepad file by Right clicking your mouse > New > New Text Document. Then in the notepad file type the following statement correctly ren private private.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} and save the file as lock.bat in the drive where you created your folder named private

3. Create a another notepad file by following the above steps, then in the notepad file type the following statement correctly ren windows.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} private and save the file as unlock.bat in the drive where you created your folder named private

4. That's it! If you clicked on the lock file, then your folder will link to control panel and your folder contents cannot be viewed, and if you click unlock then it can be viewed normally.

NOTE:- This trick will not work in Windows Vista.

If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.
Also in Australia , the Australian emergency number 000 can be dialled whilst your mobile phone keyboard is locked. This is another reason why 000 receives so many false emergency calls!.

2. Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

Yet, the saddest story of the financial meltdown is the common man. In less than 20 days this month, 30 well-known international companies have announced job cuts. Soft drink distributor Pepsi Bottling Group Inc is planning to slash about 3,150 jobs across US, Canada Europe and Mexico as part of its restructuring plan. This is expected to result in pre-tax savings of up to $160 million. "These moves will allow our business to better deal with the challenging macroeconomic conditions that currently exist, " Pepsi Bottling Group's chairman and chief executive officer Eric Foss said.

U K-based telecom major British Telecom will cut 10,000 jobs by March 2009. About 4, 000 of the job losses will be direct BT staff, the remaining 6,000 will be from related employees. The cuts will mainly affect agency and contract staff and offshore workers, the company said, but sub-contractors and other indirect employees would also lose their jobs. BT has also said its India operations won't be affected. The move to cut jobs comes after the company posted an 11 per cent decline in pre-tax profits at pound 590 million for the September quarter. A report in The Telegraph said, 'BT has cut its headcount from 250,000 at privatization in 1984 to 160 , 000 today and indicated there is scope for more job losses. The company said 4,000 employees have already left the business this financial year and a further 6,000, mostly in the UK , will go by the end of March.' BT has a global workforce of 160,000.

Anything but ipod and I have a zune have done some research and have discovered that the 30GB Zune failing bug also affects its twin brother, the Toshiba Gigabeat S. According to them, the culprit is the power management circuit.

The fiend is Freescale's MC13783 PMIC—chips used to regulate and control power—which is used in the the Gigabeat S Series. This is the model that Microsoft used as the basis for their Zune.

Whoever is guilty here, don't worry if you are one of the six people who have a Toshiba Gigabeat: According to one user in the same thread, the Zune fix works too.

My First Impressions:-

1. Slim device with a high resolution screen.

2. The Bold is well built and of high quality. The device seems very sturdy.

3. The speaker phone is very loud

Pros:-

1. The call quality is a lot better than my AT&T Tilt was.

2. The reception is excellent. I now receive a 3G signal inside of thick buildings where my Tilt would switch to Edge.

3. The earpiece is very loud especially at the highest setting.

4 The Speaker is very loud and clear. This is one of the best speaker phones that I have had in a cell phone.

5. The processor is faster and applications seem to switch faster than they did in my Tilt.

6. Great form factor. The phone fits easily into my hand and is comfortable to hold.

7. The vibrate setting is as good as my Tilt.

8. The battery life is excellent considering that I have it on all day and it downloads emails on a constant basis.

9. The standalone GPS is one of the best that I have had in a phone. I was able to unlock BlackBerry Maps since AT&T disables it and tries to make you use their AT&T Navigator service for $9.99/month.

10. Setting up email accounts is easy and can be done online via their secure site or right from my BlackBerry.
